Jackson County is served by two public libraries and two university libraries. 

The Carbondale Public Library  provides resources and services to support the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of its community.

The Sallie Logan Public Library in Murphysboro provides free services to all residents living within the corporate city limits with services available to all others for a fee. The library holds over 58, 000 materials including books for children and adults,  compact discs, books on cassette, DVDs, videos and magazines.  

Southern Illinois University Carbondale provides two on campus libraries accessible to the general public. Morris Library is the main library for Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC).  The Library holds more than 2.6 million volumes, 3.6 million microform units, and over 36,000 current periodicals and serials.  As the campus center for access to academic information and collaborative academic technology projects, the Library provides a wide range of services, including reference assistance, instructional and technical support, distance learning, geographic information systems (GIS), and multimedia courseware development.  The SIU School of Law Library provides resources for legal research by law students, attorneys, university community and the general public.
